How Social Media Now Shapes Google and AI Search Results

Instagram posts now appear in Google results, and AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity cite social platforms more often than they did at the start of the year. Here is what that means for how your business shows up in search.

The short version: social media is no longer separate from search. Public Instagram posts from business and creator accounts can appear in Google, and AI search tools increasingly pull from Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, and TikTok when they answer questions. What people say about you on social platforms, and what you publish there, now feeds the answers customers see before they ever reach your website.

Instagram content is now searchable on Google

Since July 10, 2025, Instagram has allowed Google and other search engines to index public photos, videos, Reels, and carousels from professional accounts, meaning business and creator profiles belonging to users over 18. The setting is on by default and can be turned off under Settings, then Privacy, with the option labeled “Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results” (Metricool). For a local business, that means a well-captioned post about a service, an event, or a location can show up for the same searches your website targets.

AI search tools are citing social platforms more often

A study by Goodie that tracked 1,856,259 social citations across 10 AI surfaces between January 19 and August 25, 2026 found that social platforms grew from 4.9 percent to 7.2 percent of all AI citations over that period, while citations to brands’ own websites stayed roughly flat. LinkedIn grew from about 8 percent of social citations to about a fifth, Gemini began citing Facebook in August and reached about 13 percent of its social citations within weeks, and Perplexity settled on LinkedIn as about a third of its social sources (Goodie).

OtterlyAI’s analysis of more than 100 million AI citations found a similar mix, with Reddit making up 46.4 percent of social citations and YouTube 31.8 percent, and with YouTube accounting for more than half of social citations inside Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode (OtterlyAI).

The sources change quickly, so spread your presence

These citation patterns are not stable. In mid-August 2026, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations fell from an average of 3.83 percent to 0.52 percent within about a week, according to tracking from Promptwatch, while Google AI Overviews and AI Mode reduced their use of Reddit only gradually over the same window (Promptwatch). Goodie counted 16 sourcing changes across five AI models in seven months, and none of them were announced by the AI companies.

The practical lesson is to avoid betting on a single platform. Businesses that keep an active, consistent presence across a few channels, along with a strong website and Google Business Profile, are better protected when one AI tool changes where it looks.

Why social signals matter to AI answers

AI systems try to confirm what a business says about itself with what other people say about it. Reviews, firsthand posts, community discussions, creator videos, and professional commentary on LinkedIn all serve as that outside perspective. When those sources describe your business consistently, and in the same terms your website uses, AI tools have more confidence recommending you.

What to do now

  • Treat professional profiles like search listings. Use clear bios with your services and city, keep your name, address, and phone details consistent everywhere, and link back to your website.
  • Write captions people could search for. Describe what is in the post in plain language, including the service and location, and add alt text to images.
  • Choose two or three platforms and post consistently. Instagram and Facebook for local reach, YouTube for answers, and LinkedIn for professional services and clinicians cover most businesses.
  • Encourage reviews and customer content. Creator partnerships and user-generated content give AI tools more firsthand perspectives to draw from, as long as partnerships are clearly disclosed.
  • Join communities honestly. Answer questions where your customers ask them, in your own name, and avoid fake accounts or paid posts disguised as opinions.
  • Check how AI tools describe you. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode about your services in your city every month and note which sources they cite.

A note for healthcare practices

Patient stories and testimonials can be powerful, but they need written authorization, should never reveal protected health information without consent, and must follow FTC rules for endorsements and disclosures. Clinician-led educational content, community involvement, and responses to public reviews that do not confirm someone is a patient are safer ways to build the social presence AI tools now read.
