Why AI Search Visitors Convert at Higher Rates
Recent studies from Adobe, Microsoft Clarity, Semrush and Ahrefs show AI-referred visitors convert and engage at higher rates. Here is what it means for healthcare.
The short version: visitors who arrive from AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI features are still a small share of traffic, but study after study shows they convert at a higher rate and engage more deeply than visitors from traditional search. For healthcare, where Google now shows AI Overviews on most health searches, being cited in those answers matters more every quarter.
What the data shows
| Finding | Source |
|---|---|
| AI-referred retail visitors converted 60% higher than non-AI traffic, spent 59% more time on site, and were 34% less likely to bounce. A year earlier, non-AI visits brought in more revenue per visit. | Adobe Digital Insights, August 2026 |
| LLM referrals converted to sign-ups at 1.66%, compared with 0.15% for search and 0.13% for direct traffic. | Microsoft Clarity, November 2025 |
| The average AI search visitor was 4.4 times as valuable as the average organic search visitor, based on conversion rate. | Semrush, July 2025 |
| On Ahrefs’ own site, AI search drove 0.5% of visits but 12.1% of sign-ups. | Ahrefs, June 2025 |
These studies come from analytics and SEO vendors and none of them measure healthcare specifically, so the exact multiples should be read with care. The direction is consistent across all of them, though, and Adobe’s year-over-year trend shows the gap moving further in AI’s favor as people grow more comfortable using these tools to make decisions.
Why AI visitors convert
Someone who asks an AI assistant to compare treatment options or find a specialist has usually done their research inside the conversation already. By the time they click through to a practice website, they are closer to a decision than a person scanning ten blue links. Patients are already behaving this way, as 47% of patients in a 2026 survey said they had used AI to research providers, up from 31% the year before (rater8, 2026 Patient Choice Report).
Why this is urgent in healthcare
- AI Overviews appeared on 89% of healthcare keywords tracked by BrightEdge in December 2025, up from 59% two years earlier, and on 100% of treatment and procedure queries (BrightEdge).
- When an AI summary appeared, Google users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- Brands cited inside an AI Overview earned about 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that were not cited (Seer Interactive, 2025).
What we see in client data
For one specialty healthcare client, impressions in AI-generated search results rose 43% from June to July of this year, and AI’s share of the client’s total search impressions climbed from 6.9% to 9.7% over the summer while traditional organic clicks declined. For that client we track AI assistants as their own channel in GA4, so we can see exactly what these visitors do once they arrive.
How to get cited
These are the foundations of our SEO and answer engine optimization work.
- Publish clear, direct answers to the questions patients ask, written and reviewed by your clinicians.
- Show who wrote and reviewed each page, with credentials and author schema.
- Keep statistics consistent across your site, so AI tools are never left choosing between two different numbers from the same practice.
- Keep your Google Business Profile, reviews, and provider details current, because AI assistants draw on all of them.
