Google’s October 2026 AI Mode Update: What It Means for Local Businesses

On October 15, 2026, Google added more prominent links, a section for official sources, and clickable creator profiles to AI Mode and AI Overviews. Here is what changed and how local businesses and practices can benefit.

The short version: Google is making it easier to click through from its AI answers to the websites behind them. Links now appear more often and higher inside AI responses, Google is testing a section that highlights official sources for specific tasks, and video creators can appear with clickable Search profiles. Businesses that publish clear, accurate answers and keep their official information current are in the best position to earn those clicks.

What Google changed

Google announced the update on October 15, 2026, and it applies to both AI Mode and AI Overviews (9to5Google, Search Engine Land):

  • More inline links, placed higher. Links are embedded in the words and phrases of the AI response and appear earlier in the answer more often.
  • Official sources at the top. Google is testing a section at the top of some responses for the one or two official sites people need to complete a task or confirm a fact, with context on why each link is useful.
  • Creator and publisher profiles. On some videos in AI Mode, people can click a creator’s name to open a Google Search profile with more of their work. Google says these are available to eligible creators and publishers.
  • More visual related links. The section at the end of some responses now shows image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
  • Expanded article carousels. Carousels for timely articles and for publishers people choose as Preferred Sources are rolling out to more locations and languages, and Google says use of Preferred Sources has grown 7x this year.

What it means for local businesses and practices

The official sources test is the most important change for most local businesses. When someone asks how to book an appointment, what a practice’s hours are, or whether a business offers a specific service, Google wants to point them to the official page. That rewards businesses whose websites state those facts clearly, on pages built for that purpose, and whose Google Business Profile matches the website exactly.

The added inline links reward pages that answer specific questions directly. A service page that explains what a treatment involves, who it is for, what it costs, and how to get started gives Google a clean passage to link from, while a vague page full of general marketing language does not.

Creator profiles reward businesses that publish video under a consistent identity. If you or your clinicians appear on YouTube regularly, building that channel now puts you in a better position as Google expands these profiles.

What to do now

  • Make your official information easy to find. Keep hours, locations, booking steps, insurance or payment details, and contact options on clearly labeled pages, and keep them identical to your Google Business Profile.
  • Rewrite thin service pages. Each priority service deserves its own page that answers the questions people ask before they book, in plain language, with headings that match those questions.
  • Add structured data. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and VideoObject schema help Google understand what each page is and when to cite it.
  • Publish video under a consistent name. Answer common questions on YouTube with accurate captions and chapters, and embed those videos on the related pages of your site.
  • Measure what you can. Google still does not separate AI Mode clicks in Search Console, so track leads, calls, and bookings by landing page and watch for changes in referral patterns.
